Freight and Shipping Industry in Pakistan

Economic development of a country depends upon various factors such as its natural resources, capital goods and human resources. Pakistan has emerged, as a good place for investment and its stock exchange is one of the best performing bourses in the emerging markets. Pakistan also see an expansion in trade finance which will involve building good relationships with other countries as they see a great potential to expand trade and investment between them. All in all, the economy is growing; it has shown a positive number in terms of GDP, exports, production, foreign investment, and relationship with other countries.

Freight sector inefficiencies and low service quality are costing the national economy billions annually. It has been proposed to devise a new regulatory framework to develop freight transport infrastructure to facilitate inter-modal connectivity and private sector participation since one of the major challenges facing the fractured transport system is the lack of a unified planning structure.

The transport system has direct and indirect linkage with all the important sectors of the economy. The size of transport infrastructure affects the economic development of any country. An efficient and good quality transport system contributes to economic growth by lowering production cost. Pakistan has several thousand kilometers of land borders with its neighboring countries: Iran, Afghanistan, China and India, with five main entry points but the volume of trade through these routes is very low. Geographically, Pakistan is divided in to Eastern and Western corridors and flow of traffic is from North to South as seaports are located in the South. In Pakistan, Road, Rail and Air are three major components of transport infrastructure.

As more than 95 per cent of the total freight trade of Pakistan is seaborne, the overall objective of the Ministry of Ports and Shipping includes modernization and corporatization of Ports and Shipping with a view to introducing landlord concept in Ports, rationalizing Ports’ tariffs in order to be competitive in the region, introducing modern technology and data base in line with the present day trends.
There are three major Seaports:

– Karachi Port – Karachi Port is the premier port of Pakistan and handles about 75% of the entire national trade.

Port Muhammad Bin Qasim – Port Qasim is Pakistan’s first industrial and multi-purpose deep sea port.

Gwadar Port – Situated on the Baluchistan Coast, it is about 460 km from Karachi and 120 km from the Iranian border.

HTAL will hope to play a strong part in the Freight and Shipping market and overcome the challenges and continue growing.
In this industry, HTAL’s challenge is to:

– Cope with the economic changes and adapt themselves;

– Accept and explore new technology;

– Gain trust locally and internationally;

– Continue giving the best of their services

FOREWORD

As the concept of trade globalized it in turn changed the idea and manner of business, logistics and transportation. This new approach demands a trustworthy partner who is ready to embrace the changes and update its business plan in order to deliver on demand. With its geographical benefits, Pakistan is one of the up-and-coming markets for its neighboring nations. The door way to this new possibility is through Karachi, the most cosmopolitan city in Pakistan. With its three shipping ports: the Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and the recently urbanized Gwadar Port, Karachi contributes the most towards trade and industry in Pakistan, facilitating importers and exporters to carry out business activities efficiently. HTAL has consistently met the challenges of the progressive commercial trading.
